"Forward to the Future: The German Elections & the Transatlantic View"

Germany’s domestic take on the Covid pandemic and recent extreme weather events seem to determine the early stages of the party’s election campaigns for Germany’s federal election in the end of September this year. The polls show, different varieties of the new federal government are still possible – nothing is decided yet.

However, one thing is clear: With Chancellor Angela Merkel leaving office this autumn and a new government in place, transatlantic relations are placed on a new footing.
This panel discussion will give insights into central domestic issues of Germany’s election year and discuss how possible government coalitions could approach transatlantic relations and common global challenges in the years to come.

• How might the new government approach big domestic issues, from pension reform to digitalization, migration, identity, and affordable living? And how will mayors, social movements and other shape the image of Germany globally?  
• How big a role does the departure of Chancellor Merkel play in how the country’s domestic and foreign policy could change? 
• How would a new German government team up with the US to tackle common challenges such as climate as well as cyber security threats?

Just before the German elections, we want to engage in a transatlantic dialogue with the following panelists:

• Elisabeth Niejahr, Managing Director for the area “Strengthening Democracy”, Hertie Foundation and Sounding Board Member, New Urban Progress
• Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, Vice president, German Marshall Fund of the United States
• Crystal Swan, Senior Policy Fellow, Progressive Policy Institute (Closing Words)

Journalist and author Sumi Somaskanda will be moderating the event.
