“TOWARDS THE ZERO CARBON CITY – FINANCING URBAN TRANSFORMATION“
With Dr Fritzi Köhler-Geib, Chief Economist at KfW Group and Dr Gereon Uerz, Head of Sustainability at Gropyus
Will Europe manage to become climate neutral by 2050? Cities are a key contributor to climate change. But in cities, projects to tackle the climate emergency, are being developed, too: decarbonisation efforts for energy, transport, buildings, and industry play a growing role. There are promising approaches to reach climate neutral cities in Europe and Germany, but these projects need to be paid for.
How can finance accelerate urban transformation? How may green urban infrastructures be financed, especially after Covid? Can finance innovations, like green bonds, help to phase out fossil-fuel vehicles?
These and other interesting questions were discussed as part of “Towards the zero carbon city – Financing urban transformation“ – the first episode of a two-part series within the Cities podcast of Think forwards.
Discussants are Fritzi Köhler-Geib, Chief Economist at KfW Group and Gereon Uerz, currently Head of Sustainability at Gropyus.
Additional experts are Philipp Rode, Executive Director of LSE Cities and Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Oliver Weigel, Head of the division for urban development at the German ministry of the interior.
